When choosing the perfect business signs, it is essential to understand the different types of signs available and their best uses.
Each type of sign serves a unique purpose and offers distinct advantages, from attracting foot traffic and enhancing brand visibility to providing crucial information and guiding customers.
Whether you’re a small local shop, a large retail chain, or an office building, selecting the right business signage can significantly impact your success.
In this guide, we’ll explore the top 10 types of signs and their best uses, helping you make an informed decision to elevate your business’s presence and effectiveness.
Here are the Top 10 Business Signs and the Best Uses for Each
Blade signs are fantastic for busy areas with lots of foot traffic, like downtown streets and shopping districts, because they stick out from the building and can be seen from different angles.
They work well for businesses with limited storefront space or those on narrow streets, making it easy for people walking by to notice them.
Customize them with different shapes and add lighting, making them eye-catching and effective day and night.
Whether wall-mounted, pole-mounted, projecting, or hanging, blade signs are an excellent choice for maximizing visibility and attracting attention to your business, no matter your location.
Channel letters are an excellent choice for retail stores, shopping malls, and other businesses. These have 3D profiles, and you can choose either LED or neon illumination options for them.
If your business operates in the late evening hours or during nighttime, these illuminated signs are a great way to create an impact.
Some say they are the Gold Standard of signs. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a channel letter sign.
Monument signs are a great way to make your business stand out and be more visible. These signs come in various forms, each offering unique advantages depending on the specific needs and environment.
Let’s explore the 3 most popular types of monument signs—ground-level,pylon, and post and panel—and what sets each apart.
1. Ground-Level Monument Signs
These signs sit close to the ground, typically no more than five feet tall, and are designed to be at eye level for drivers and pedestrians. They offer a professional and upscale appearance.
Whether providing a listing of businesses at a shopping mall, helping customers navigate a complex, or using digital signage to communicate your message, these freestanding signs contribute to the overall perception of your property.
Ground-Level Monument Sign Examples
2. Pylon Signs
Pylon signs, also known as pole signs, are taller and more prominent than ground-level monument signs. They are often 10 to 20 feet in height and mounted on one or more poles, making them highly visible from a distance.
They are great for businesses that need to be seen from the freeway or people driving by. Places like shopping centers, gas stations, and car dealerships use these to attract customers.
Just like ground-level monument signs, they can have a list of stores or be dedicated to an entire business.
Also, if you have an existing pylon sign on your property, it’s easier to update the sign when it comes to city permits since the sign’s existing structure is already in place and permitted.
Post and panel signs are versatile and budget-friendly. They consist of one or more vertical posts supporting a panel displaying the sign’s content. These signs are usually medium height and designed to provide clear, easy-to-read information.
The panels are easy to update or replace, making it simple to change your message or branding as needed. These signs are made from weather-resistant materials and can withstand different environmental conditions while still looking great.
A dimensional letter sign is a 3D sign made from materials like metal or acrylic, designed to give your business a more eye-catching and professional look.
They get their name from their three-dimensional construction, which makes them more engaging and noticeable from different angles than flat signs.
These signs are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. They can be lighted or unlit and are durable enough to withstand various weather conditions.
Moreover, their high level of customizability allows businesses to craft a unique and polished appearance that truly reflects your brand identity, all while being cost-effective.
Illuminated signs come to life with the vibrant glow of LEDs, neon, or fluorescent bulbs, creating eye-catching displays that shine day and night.
They come in various forms, including channel letters, neon signs, LED signs, lightbox signs (cabinet signs), digital signage, and externally lit signs.
Digital signs are dynamic, showing messages like events, dates, and pricing on screens. Some even display full animation or video, much like TV screens.
Externally lit signs are illuminated from above or below with spotlights or barn lighting, casting a bright glow on your business name.
Think of illuminated signs as 24/7 advertising for your business. They ensure your brand is always visible and attracts attention around the clock.
Investing in high-quality property management signs can make your location more desirable, easier to navigate and may even lead to higher rents.
Property management signs come in many forms, whether a single business needs signs throughout its property or shopping malls that require storefront signs, directories, and wayfinding signs for customers.
Residential communities, apartment complexes, and office buildings also need cohesive sign programs. These signs should elevate the space, help visitors navigate, and include required ADA and regulatory signs.
Types of Property Management Signs:
Directional Signs: These signs guide visitors to specific locations such as entrances, exits, parking areas, and amenities.
Informational Signs: Provide important information such as building numbers, office hours, community rules, and emergency procedures.
Safety and Regulatory Signs: Indicate safety measures, regulations, and compliance information, including no-smoking areas, fire exits, no parking signs, and speed limits.
Identification Signs: Display the names of buildings, businesses, or facilities within the property.
Promotional Signs: Highlight special events, promotions, or new amenities available within the property.
Interior signs can really transform your business, making it more functional, professional, and welcoming from the inside.
They provide essential information, help visitors and employees find their way easily, and add a bit of style and brand recognition that improves the overall look and feel of the space.
With the right signs, your store or office can become more than just a place to shop or work; it can become a place where everyone wants to be.
Custom graphics are some of the best ways to attract customers. You can choose from vinyl lettering, hand-painted signs, printed graphics, wall and floor graphics, vehicle and even boat graphics. These dynamic signs are an excellent advertising tool for just about every business.
Whether you’re looking to enhance your storefront, decorate your interior, or promote your brand on the go, custom graphic signs provide an effective and visually appealing solution.
Window graphics come in a wide range of varieties, each offering unique benefits and styles to suit different needs. Some popular types include:
Vinyl Window Decals: These are adhesive graphics that can be applied to any glass surface, providing a sleek and professional look. They are perfect for displaying logos, business hours, and promotional messages.
Perforated Vinyl Window Film: This type of graphic allows for one-way visibility, meaning you can see out from the inside, but those outside see the graphic. It’s ideal for privacy and impactful advertising without blocking natural light.
Static Cling Stickers: These non-adhesive stickers cling to glass surfaces through static electricity, making them easy to apply, remove, and reposition. They are great for temporary promotions and seasonal displays.
Hand Painted Signs: For a more traditional and artistic look, hand-painted signs offer a unique and personalized touch. They can be customized to match your brand’s aesthetic and add a charming, handcrafted feel to your windows.
Neon signs have been a favorite for over a century
Traditional Neon
Traditional neon signs are bright, colorful signs made from glass tubes filled with neon gas that glow when an electric current passes through them.
Known for their vibrant and nostalgic look, these signs catch attention and add a unique aesthetic to businesses, restaurants, bars, and even home decor.
LED Neon
A modern alternative to traditional neon is LED neon, using flexible LED strips to mimic the look of classic neon lights. These signs offer the same bright, eye-catching glow but with improved energy efficiency and durability.
Although very bright, some purists believe that LED neon doesn’t perfectly replicate the warmth and intensity of traditional neon lights.
Whether you choose traditional neon or LED neon, both options provide a stunning and effective way to make your business stand out.

We’ll also share details about each sign type, the services we provided, and information about the businesses they represent.
Let’s get started!
The Valencia Marketplace Monument Sign
Monument signs like the one we made for Valencia Marketplace are the gold standard for shopping centers. They allow tenants to change or update their names without replacing the whole sign.
It’s essential to design them to complement the mall’s architectural feel.
Finneys Crafthouse Restaurant Signs in Stevenson Ranch
Finney’s Crafthouse is a family-owned American tavern chain specializing in craft beer and made-from-scratch globally-inspired cuisine.
After helping them develop sign programs for 11 locations from San Luis Obispo to Laguna Beach, we were excited to hear they are opening a new location in Stevenson Ranch.
Channel Letters
Each Finney’s location has signs with specific needs.
Since their Stevenson Ranch location is in a shopping mall, it must be seen from a distance. We used channel letters so the business name would stand out day or night.
We installed channel letter signs outdoors on three sides.
We added barn lighting to the sign facing the parking lot, which gives it an extra flare when you walk up.
Hand-Painted Signs
To give the building a more custom feel, we added a hand-painted “F logo” sign in the top corner, as seen from the parking lot.
There is also a black “F logo” graphic above the bar, only at the Stevenson Ranch location.
Neon Sign
Inside the restaurant, there is a neon sign with the tagline “Craft Beer Spoken Here.” This sign is in all their restaurants.
Toppers Pizza Place Restaurant Signs in Valencia & Canyon Country
Toppers Pizza Place in Canyon Country and Valencia are beloved local favorites that provide great pizza dining experiences with quality food, drinks, and service in a casual, dog-friendly atmosphere.
As Topper’s sign company, we’ve worked with them on all 10 locations to create inspiring signs with local style.
Their Canyon Country and Valencia restaurants are no exception.

Toppers Pizza Canyon Country
The Canyon Country location is the former Homes and Land Bank building. They decided to keep the bank as a theme and highlighted some of its elements, like the vault, a safe, Dropbox, and other interesting items that weren’t removed but incorporated into the restaurant’s appeal.

What About Building Sign Materials?
When it comes to building signs, the choice of materials often depends on the intended use, desired longevity, appearance, budget, and environmental factors.
Here is an organized breakdown of some of the top materials commonly used for building signs:
Durable Outdoor Materials:
Aluminum and Metal Alloys: Lightweight, rust-resistant, and versatile.
MDO (Medium Density Overlay): Weather-resistant plywood popular in construction.
Concrete: Heavy and durable, suited for permanent installations.
Stone: Natural materials used for monuments and upscale entrances.
Wood: Offers a rustic appearance, with redwood and cedar being especially durable.
Lightweight and Versatile Materials:
Acrylic and Plexiglas: Used for both interior and exterior, known for a clean, modern look.
Vinyl: Flexible and printable, used for banners and window graphics.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Lightweight plastic for both indoor and outdoor use.
Fabric: Ideal for banners, flags, and large printed displays.
Illuminated and Digital Sign Materials:
Polycarbonate and Lexan: Durable materials for illuminated sign faces.
Neon: Gas-based illumination, giving a retro look.
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes): Modern digital displays and illuminated signs.
Want More Details on Sign Materials? Here You Go…
Here we go into more detail about building sign materials.
Acrylic and Plexiglas: These are popular for interior and exterior signs because they offer a clean, modern look and are durable against many weather conditions. They can be used for illuminated signs, directory signs, and more.
Aluminum and Metal Alloys: Lightweight and rust-resistant, aluminum is frequently used for outdoor signage. It can be painted or laminated for protection and aesthetics. Dibond, a type of aluminum composite, is another commonly used material.
Vinyl: Often used for banners, wall graphics, and window decals. It’s flexible and can be printed on, making it a versatile choice for various applications.
Wood: Wooden signs offer a rustic and natural appearance. Depending on the type of wood and treatments applied, they can be quite durable. Redwood and cedar are often used for their resistance to decay.
MDO (Medium Density Overlay): A weather-resistant plywood used for outdoor signs. Its smooth overlay is ideal for painting, making it cost-effective and popular, especially in the construction industry.
Polycarbonate and Lexan: These are tough materials often used for illuminated sign faces because of their durability and ability to diffuse light.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): A lightweight and versatile plastic material used for both indoor and outdoor signs. Sintra is a popular brand of PVC sheeting used in sign-making.
Neon: Used for iconic neon signs, neon is a gas that glows when an electric current passes through it. These signs are less common now but remain popular for certain retro or vintage aesthetics.
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes): With the rise of digital and electronic signage, LEDs are increasingly used for illuminated signs, message boards, and digital displays. They are energy-efficient and can be used in a variety of settings.
Fabric: Used primarily for banners, canvas prints, flags, and trade show displays. It’s lightweight and can be printed on with vibrant colors.
Concrete: A durable material often molded or precast for signs. It can be combined with metal or acrylic details, and its appearance varies from modern to rustic. Its weight ensures stability but requires careful installation.
Stone: A variety of natural materials like granite, slate, limestone, and marble, often engraved or sandblasted. Used for elegant monuments and entrances, stone signs are durable, weather-resistant, and vary in cost based on type.
Main Factors to Keep in Mind
When choosing a material for a sign, it’s crucial to consider the specific needs of the project. Factors like aesthetics, location (indoor vs. outdoor), desired lifespan, and budget should all influence the material choice.
What About Building Signs Design? What You Need to Know
Working with an experienced sign company with a high-level in-house design department will ensure you get the signs you are looking for.
They control the entire process from start to finish, so there is no guesswork if the sign can be built as designed. They already know sign fabrication, installation requirements, and city compliance.
Here are some of the main elements that go into designing building signs.
Crafting Your Brand’s Visual Voice
A sign is often the first thing a customer sees, which speaks volumes about your brand. It sets expectations and begins the customer experience before they walk through the door.
For new businesses, a sign is a chance to make a memorable introduction. For established brands, it’s an opportunity to reinforce recognition and trust.
Either way, investing in high-quality design that aligns with your brand’s identity and values is critical. It should reflect your business’s personality, whether professional and polished or quirky and fun.
Tailoring Design to Location
Location plays a huge role in how your sign should be designed. A sign perched on a busy highway needs to be bold and simple so it can be read at high speeds.
In a quaint shopping district, a sign might be more detailed and artisanal to reflect the surroundings. The environment influences materials, too.
A beachfront business might choose materials resistant to rust and fading, while an urban storefront might need a sturdy sign to withstand the bustle of the city.
Striking the Right Balance
Your sign should stand out but not stick out. The right design balances uniqueness with the environment and neighboring signage. It should capture attention for the right reasons—clear branding and legibility—not because it’s overly loud or cluttered.
Finding this balance means considering the font size, color contrast, and imagery that represents your brand effectively at a glance.
Compliance and Accessibility
Beyond looks, there are practical considerations. Your sign must meet local zoning laws, which may dictate size, lighting, and placement.
Accessibility is also key; it should be readable and understandable for everyone, including those with disabilities. This means considering height, color contrast, and possibly Braille for wayfinding signs.
Material Matters
Longevity is as important as immediate appeal. The materials for your sign should endure the local weather and the wear and tear of the environment.
Quality materials may cost more upfront but can save money and maintain a polished image over time.
Making a Lasting Impression
Ultimately, a well-designed sign is a long-term investment in your brand’s visibility and reputation. It’s not just about making a good first impression; it’s about creating a lasting one.
