Staybridge Suites monument signage in Oxnard, California makes a lasting impression.
1 – Increased Visibility & Brand Recognition
Positioned at eye level, monument signs make it easier for customers and visitors to locate your business. This 24/7 visibility reinforces brand identity and helps establish your location.
2 – Professional & Prestigious Appearance
The low-profile design of monument signage—often crafted from sturdy materials—conveys permanence. Businesses with monument signs project an image of credibility and stability.
3 – Customization for Unique Branding
Add logos, dimensional lettering, custom color schemes, LED illumination, or digital displays. This versatility ensures your monument sign reflects your brands personality.
4 – Durability & Weather Resistance
Made from materials like concrete, brick, and stone, these signs can withstand harsh weather conditions for years—even decades—when well-maintained.
5 – Wayfinding & Navigation Assistance
Monument signs are critical for large complexes, shopping centers, hospitals, universities, and residential communities. Clear signage simplifies directions and reduces confusion.
6 – Nighttime Visibility
Illumination options—such as backlit panels, LED lighting, and halo-lit lettering—ensure your business remains visible after dark, enhancing both curb appeal and security.
7 – Compliance with Local Zoning Regulations
Many municipalities favor monument signs over taller pylon signs or billboards. Their lower height often meets local zoning requirements and community aesthetic guidelines more easily.
8 – Long-Term Cost Effectiveness
Monument signs are one-time investments that provide continuous exposure without monthly advertising fees. Their longevity translates to a better return on investment over time.

Monument Sign Design: 5 Key Factors
A well-designed monument sign enhances visibility, brand recognition, and impact. Consider these factors:
1 – Size & Scale
The sign should be large enough to be visible from the road without overwhelming the property. Check zoning regulations for height and width restrictions.
2 – Colors & Fonts
Use high-contrast color schemes for readability and avoid overly decorative fonts. Ensure the design aligns with your brand identity.
3 – Logos & Graphics
Keep logos proportional, use simple yet meaningful graphics, and maintain consistency with your branding and marketing materials.
4 – Lighting & Illumination
Consider backlit, halo-lit, or LED lighting for 24/7 visibility. Digital displays allow for dynamic content updates and improved nighttime readability.
5 – Placement & Landscaping
Position the sign unobstructed by trees or structures, and enhance curb appeal with landscaping elements like shrubs and decorative rocks. Ensure safe placement away from traffic or pedestrian pathways.

Monument Signage FAQs
Q: What is the difference between a freestanding sign and a monument sign?
A: A freestanding sign is any sign that stands on its own, supported by a structure rather than attached to a building. This includes pylon signs, post and panel signs, and monument signs.
A monument sign is a specific type of freestanding sign, typically low-profile, permanent, and made from durable materials like stone, brick, or metal, offering a professional, ground-level appearance.
Q: What is the difference between monument and pylon signs?
A: Monument signs are low-profile, typically 3–8 feet tall, designed for eye-level visibility and a professional appearance, making them ideal for corporate offices, schools, and residential communities.
In contrast, pylon signs are much taller (often 20+ feet) and built for long-distance visibility, commonly used by gas stations and hotels near highways.
Q: What is the difference between a marquee sign and a monument sign?
A: Monument signs are static, low-profile structures that provide permanent branding and are typically made from brick, stone, or metal. They are designed for long-term visibility and blend seamlessly with their surroundings.
Marquee signs, however, feature changeable letter boards or digital displays, making them ideal for theaters, churches, and event venues that frequently update messages. They offer a more dynamic way to communicate promotions, schedules, or announcements compared to monument signs.
Q: What is the difference between a post and panel sign and a monument sign?
A: Monument signs are permanent, durable structures made from brick, stone, or metal, designed for long-term branding and high visibility.
Post and panel signs are lighter, temporary, and cost-effective, often used for directional signage, real estate, or construction sites. They typically rely on external lighting, while monument signs can have built-in illumination.

If your business gets foot traffic, a hanging sign is one of the best ways to get noticed. These signs are designed to catch the eye of people walking by—and when done right, they make a strong first impression.
In this guide, we’ll break down what hanging signs are, how they differ from blade signs, and what options you have if you’re considering getting one custom-made.
Honey Cup Coffee House & Creamery hanging sign in Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, California.
What Is a Hanging Sign?
A hanging sign is a type of sign that sticks out from a wall or hangs down from a bracket, post, or ceiling. You’ll usually see them mounted perpendicular to a building, so they’re easy to spot from the sidewalk.
They work great in walkable areas like downtowns, shopping districts, and mixed-use centers.
They’re also super versatile—good for storefronts, lobbies, events, and even directional signage.
Escape Luxury Salon & Day Spa hanging sign in Oxnard, California.
Blade Sign vs. Hanging Sign: What’s the Difference?
People often use the terms interchangeably, and there’s definitely overlap. But here’s the breakdown:
– Blade signs are typically rigid and mounted directly to a building. They don’t swing or move.
– Hanging signs can include blade signs but also cover signs that hang from chains or brackets and may have some motion.
In short, all blade signs are hanging signs, but not all hanging signs are blade signs.
For example, a traditional carved wood sign that swings gently from a decorative bracket would be considered a hanging sign, while a fixed, double-sided panel mounted perpendicular to the wall fits the blade sign category.
Art & Soul Gallery in Santa Barbara’s Art’s District uses a hanging sign to complement their channel letters storefront sign. The two signs together is called a “Combo Sign.”
The 3 Types of Hanging Signs that Attract Foot Traffic
1 – Blade Signs
Blade signs are mounted directly to a building. These signs are double-sided and easy to spot from both directions on the sidewalk.

2 – Hanging Shop Signs
These signs usually hang from a decorative bracket and swing a bit in the breeze. They’re perfect for retail shops, boutiques, and cafes.

For HunterDouglas in Westlake Village, we went with a clean, rectangular hanging logo sign—modern, polished, and complements the buildings aesthetic.
HunterDouglas hanging sign in Westlake Village, California.
3 – Combo Signs
Pair a hanging sign with wall-mounted letters or a large storefront sign for more visibility. It’s a smart way to cover foot and vehicle traffic at the same time. This creates a layered visual experience that catches the eye from different angles and distances.
Example:
Gandolfo’s Deli in Oxnard uses both a blade sign and large channel letters. One grabs attention from the sidewalk, the other from the parking lot. Together, they work.
Gandolfo’s New York Deli in Oxnard Combo Sign uses both a projecting blade sign and channel letters on the storefront.
Outdoor Hanging Signs
If your sign’s going outside, materials matter. Go with options that handle sun, wind, and rain—like treated wood, MDO and HDO panel, powder-coated metal, or UV-protected acrylic.
We’ll also help with placement, mounting hardware, and making sure it’s up to code.
Zen Massage Place outdoor hanging sign in Ventura uses MDO and is sandblasted to give it that 3D look.
Custom Hanging Signs: Built for Your Brand
Your sign should do more than just say your name—it should reflect your style.
We’ll help you choose:
– The right shape, size, and materials — for example, a bold rectangular metal sign for a brewery or a soft-edged wooden sign for a spa.
– Fonts, logos, and brand colors — matched to your existing identity or refreshed with a new look.
– Optional lighting for better visibility — like LED edge lighting or gooseneck fixtures for evening visibility.
Whether you want something traditional, modern, or totally unique, we’ve got you covered.

Hanging Sign Ideas
Need inspiration? Here are a few popular styles:
– Rustic wood signs for restaurants and wineries.
– Modern acrylic for salons or offices.
– Sleek metal signs for corporate offices, or upscale retail spaces
– Hand-painted designs for artisan shops.
– Illuminated signs for bars, restaurants, or shopping malls.
Victoria Court in Santa Barbara is a blade sign that hangs and is also mounted to the wall. It uses halo-lit channel letters to illuminate the sign.
Installing a Hanging Sign
Once your design is finalized, the next step is getting it up safely and in compliance.
Installing a hanging sign might seem straightforward—but there’s more to it than picking a bracket and drilling into the wall. You’ve got to think about the surface you’re mounting to, how much the sign weighs, whether it’s exposed to wind, and what your city requires for permits and placement.
That’s why most businesses leave this part to the pros.
At Dave’s Signs, we handle everything behind the scenes—site surveys, permits, hardware, and installation—so your sign isn’t just secure, it’s also up to code and built to last.
We know what local ordinances allow (and what they don’t), and we’ll make sure everything’s done right the first time.

You’ll also see illuminated monument and pylon signs used at building entrances and along roadways to grab attention from a distance.
Below, we’ll walk through each of these illuminated sign types, explain how they work, and help you decide which one might be right for your business.
Channel Letters
The Carving Board Sandwiches in Woodland Hills, CA.
Channel letters are three-dimensional, individually lit letters commonly used on storefronts, restaurants, office buildings, and shopping centers. Each letter has its own internal lighting, which creates a bold, illuminated effect—day or night.
These attractive signs are highly customizable in terms of font, color, size, and lighting style. You can choose from front-lit, backlit (halo-lit), or a combination of both to match your brand and location.
Channel letter signs are a popular choice for businesses that want a clean, professional look with strong visibility. They stand out on building facades and help your name get noticed from a distance.
Lightbox Signs aka Cabinets Signs
Maor Education + Community pole mounted lightbox sign in Los Angeles, CA.
Lightbox signs—also known as cabinet signs—are illuminated panels commonly used for retail stores, shopping centers, office complexes, and multi-tenant buildings. They feature a lit face with graphics or lettering that stays visible day and night.
These signs are often rectangular or square but can be custom-shaped to fit your brand. The face is typically made of acrylic or polycarbonate with printed graphics, and the internal lighting is usually energy-efficient LEDs.
Lightbox signs are a practical and versatile option for businesses that require strong visibility and easy-to-read messaging. They work well as wall-mounted signs or pole signs and are especially effective in areas with high traffic or limited lighting.
Dimensional Letters
Finney’s Crafthouse – Externally lit dimensional letters in Burbank, CA.
Dimensional letters add depth, texture, and a polished look to your signage—making them a great choice for businesses that want a professional appearance with visual impact.
These signs can be used indoors or outdoors and come in a wide range of materials, finishes, and mounting styles. Whether illuminated or not, they’re built to withstand the elements and maintain their look over time.
If lit up, they don’t have the space needed for internal electrical components, so they require external lighting, such as spot, gooseneck, or barn lighting.
Dimensional letters incorporate various signage elements and graphic elements, which are carefully designed and integrated to create a cohesive and professional look.
Often called 3d signs, they are also a more budget-friendly option than channel letters or neon signs.
Neon Signs
Angel City Brewery in Downtown Los Angeles. Classic neon sign with animation.
Neon signs are a timeless way to boost visibility and draw attention—especially in lively downtown areas where standing out matters. Their bright glow and vintage appeal make them hard to miss, even from a distance.
They’re not just eye-catching—they’re memorable. Neon signs add character to your storefront and can instantly give your space a nostalgic or retro vibe.

Window Graphics
Even the smallest details matter. Like this Bank of the Sierra window graphic. Subtle but noticeable advertising.
By using custom print window decals you can display a custom business sign that will not only grab attention, help bring more foot traffic, but inform customers what you have to offer.
Window signs that incorporate branding elements such as your logo, brand colors, and style can further enhance your storefront’s appeal and create a cohesive, professional look.
Blade Signs
Blade signs are the go-to sign for pedestrian friendly shopping spaces because they are easy to see.
Blade signs are classic signage solutions designed to attract foot traffic. Blade signs are also effective as wayfinding signage, helping customers navigate to your business.
Often called hanging signs they are hung vertically or horizontally on a bracket or frame near the business’s entryway. They are rugged and robust and can be mounted perpendicular to walls or other surfaces. Some even hang down from the ceiling.
These signs are typically made of metal, aluminum, or MDO plywood.
Choose between illuminated or non-illuminated options to create a focal point for passersby.
These signs are ideal for areas with high foot traffic, such as downtowns and shopping malls.
Property Management Signs
Pacifica Glendale Apartments in Glendale, CA.
Property management signs are vital for any business or organization that manages multiple properties. They help communicate important information to tenants, employees, and visitors and can be used for a variety of purposes, such as wayfinding, branding, and security.
Dave’s Signs can manage your entire signage project, ensuring all your business signage needs are met from design to installation.
There are a few key things to keep in mind when planning your property management sign solution:
1 – Stated Needs & Direction of Signage:
What are your specific needs and goals for your sign creation? Do you want to use it for wayfinding, branding, or security purposes (or all of the above)?
2 – Design & Planning:
Once you know what you want your signs to achieve, it’s time to start planning the design. Work with a professional sign company to create custom signs that meet your specific needs and budget.
3 – City Permitting & Approvals:
Depending on where your property is located, you may need to obtain approval from the city or county before installing any signage. Be sure to check with local authorities to avoid any delays or surprises.
4 – Fabrication & Installation:
Once your signs are designed and approved, it’s time to have them fabricated and installed. Again, working with a professional Los Angeles sign company – like Dave’s Signs – will ensure that the process goes smoothly and that your signs are installed correctly, and safely.
Following these steps will help ensure that your property management sign solution is a success.
Apartment Signs
Noho Centre Apartments in Valley Village, CA – San Fernando Valley.
Apartment signage does more than mark your property—it helps shape first impressions. Clean, well-designed signs can attract higher-paying tenants by reflecting the care and professionalism of your community.
From entrance monuments to building numbers, parking and wayfinding, signs set the tone for the experience. Upgraded signage shows pride in the property and signals a higher standard of living.
If your goal is to appeal to renters who value comfort, style, and organization, investing in polished, modern signage can make a big difference.
Shopping Mall Signs
Garmar Plaza in Montebello, CA came to us wanting to refresh their existing shopping mall sign.
Shopping mall signage plays a key role in shaping how your property is perceived. It affects everything from curb appeal to foot traffic—and can either invite people in or push them away.
Outdated or poorly maintained signs can make a center feel neglected, while clean, modern signage signals a well-managed, attractive place to shop.
Whether you’re updating a main monument sign, tenant panels, or wayfinding throughout the property, consistency and quality make a big impact.
For malls in competitive markets like Los Angeles, refreshed signage can enhance visibility, support leasing efforts, and elevate the overall customer experience.
Business Park Signage
One of several PolyPeptide monument wayfinding signs in Torrance, CA.
Business park signs—also known as office park signs—serve both branding and practical purposes. They help businesses stand out within multi-tenant properties and guide visitors, clients, and employees to the right locations.
Including your company name and logo on well-placed signage can boost visibility and reinforce your brand to everyone passing through the area. These signs are also essential for directing traffic, identifying building entrances, and improving the overall experience for visitors.
In a large, fast-moving market like Los Angeles, professional office park signage helps your business look established and easy to find—two things that make a big difference in a competitive environment.
Office Lobby Signs
One location or many, we can take care of your office lobby signs – like we did for FocalPoint.
Office lobby signs help set the tone for your business as soon as someone walks in. A clean, well-designed custom sign reinforces your brand and adds a professional, welcoming feel to your space.

We’ll help you design a complete office suite sign system—covering everything including ADA-compliant room IDs to directional signs—so your space is polished, easy to navigate, compliant and aligned with your brand.
Storefront Signs
Storefront signs like this one for iProtech in the mall help draw attention, showcase the brand, and make the space easy to find for shoppers.
Your storefront sign is one of the first things potential customers notice—and it plays a big role in how they perceive your business. Clear, professional signage helps people find you, understand what you offer, and feel confident walking in.
Whether you’re opening a new retail location or updating an existing one, high-quality storefront signage is essential for building brand recognition and attracting foot traffic.
Well-designed storefront signage creates more visibility for your business, helping you stand out in busy shopping centers, strip malls, or downtown streets, especially in Los Angeles. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about being seen and remembered.

Promotional banners are ideal for grand openings, limited-time events, like “now hiring,” or “coming soon” messaging while your permanent sign is in production. They’re easy to install, cost-effective, and perfect for creating buzz around your business.
A-frame signs are a go-to choice for sidewalks in busy downtown shopping areas. These portable signs are great for daily specials, directional messaging, or grabbing the attention of foot traffic in a crowded retail setting.
For events, real estate listings, or contractor branding, yard signs offer another simple and effective way to get your message out. Lightweight and easy to move, they’re ideal for short-term use without sacrificing visibility.
